Here are two great websites for you to practise your spelling and maths. You need the same login for both. If you have lost or forgotten how to log in check with your teacher.
Welcome to year 1
The teacher in 1KS is Miss Smith and in 1NB it is Miss Bamford. The teaching assistants will be Miss Needham (1KS) and Mrs Anderson (1NB). Each half term we will have a topic which helps us to learn in a fun, exciting way and achieve the objectives set in the national curriculum. Use the website to keep up to date with what your child is doing. Please look at our year 1 blog where we regularly update it with photos and videos as well as important dates. Please write comments to help us to win year group bloggers of the week!
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside…
We have made it to the final term! Teachers may be celebrating more than the parents at the thought of 6 weeks of summer and it will soon be here, but first we have a busy half term ahead. Our topic and literacy work will be based around the seaside, leading up to our trip at the end of the term.
We will be learning more about rhyme and poetry, through exploration of the books ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and ‘Sharing a Shell’. We will be continuing rhyming strings and trying to make a whole class version of one of these well known poems, we will also be performing these in small groups. Our story this half term will be ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ and we are going to be using story maps, key actions and drama as well as other resources to help sequence it chronologically before adapting it to make our own story, using different foods.
Geography work will help us to learn about the human and physical features of a UK seaside town such as Cleethorpes and compare it to a built up area such as New York, revisiting work on continents and countries in relation to the equator as well as the weather and climate.
Artwork will be inspired by seaside features and landmarks such as shells, lighthouses, fairground rides etc and we will be manipulating clay with our hands and tools to create sculptures.
Look out for work around school from technology week where we will have worked with other year groups to build dens to raise money for Save the Children, and will have experimented with a range of technology.
Maths Makes Sense is teaching us about time in hours and minutes, and spike teaches us o’clock and half past. It will also have more of a focus on months of the year, using our birthdays to think about the year. It will continue to develop skills in + – x and ÷ and we are continuously trying to support children with concrete materials to ensure a greater understanding of number. We will be learning more about place value in order to help us to answer vertical addition and subtraction maths stories, moving on from 2 digit whole numbers to 3 digit whole numbers. Please keep practising counting at home, and make sure you count in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as learning number bonds to 20.
